The Birth of AS215855

My journey acquiring an autonomous system number (ASN) and IPv6 address space for personal networking experimentation.
Finding a LIR
I needed a sponsor to obtain resources since my use case was hobbyist-focused. I selected Securebit, a provider in the RIPE region offering ASN, IPv6 prefixes and a VPS to justify resources for non-EU residents.
The Process
Registration involved applying for a 32-bit ASN and /44 IPv6 allocation. Setup fees totaled 60 CHF one-time plus 15 CHF annually, with BGP sessions included via an 11 CHF/month VPS.

Network Setup
I deployed dual infrastructure using Debian and Bird2:
- Europe: BGP connectivity through Securebit's Tier 1 upstream connections
- US (NYC): Neptune Networks VPS ($8/month) with secondary upstream via bgptunnel.com
I subdivided my /44 into two /48 prefixes for geographic distribution.

IP Management
phpIPAM provided centralized tracking of address assignments across my expanding network, preventing administrative complications.

Results
I successfully established multi-continent connectivity, signed my prefixes with RPKI, and added supplementary resources from August Internet—demonstrating that obtaining Internet resources is achievable for dedicated hobbyists.
